A Zen experience indeed, as we explored new territory at the Japanese Tea Gardens on Sunday (known as the Chinese Sunken Garden during WWII). JD and I were quite surprised at the picturesque gardens tucked away inside Brackenridge Park, near the zoo. I'm sure spring rains help revitalize the greenery before the harsh summer sun takes it's toll, but it was still a pleasant treat.
The area was constructed in the early 1900's in an old rock quarry and renovated over the past year. You are welcomed by a large stone pagoda and pathways that carry you throughout the gardens, by way of bridges over lily and koi ponds, and scenic nooks waiting anxiously to be the backdrop for family photos.
